ISLAND FALLS, Maine — The town of Island Falls is looking to restore widespread community sports for all things summer as officials gear up for the popular Summerfest.
Because of COVID-19, most of the traditional events were canceled last year, including the parade, so officials are hoping for a spectacular turnout for this year’s festivities.
“Last year we did very few events with low attendance,” explained Ruth Frazier, recreation director for Island Falls. “This year, we look forward to seeing everyone with even greater participation.”
Island Falls’ Summerfest is traditionally one of the more popular summer festivals in southern Aroostook County, thanks to 10 days of events, culminating with an elaborate parade through its downtown.
This year’s event runs from Friday, July 30 to Sunday, Aug. 8, with a variety of activities for young and old alike. Popular attractions include a car show and barbecue at G.R. Porter’s and Sons; antique tractor pulls; a lobster and steak dinner; a canoe/kayak race on Birch Point; a boat parade on Pleasant Lake; a pet show; tours of the newly reopened Island Falls Opera House; and a fireworks display.
“We started planning a little later than normal, but events are a go,” Frazier said. “People seem to be happy about plans, and something we did this year was include raffles to raise money for fireworks.”
She added that in the past the town has often struggled with raising money for fireworks, but this year, people’s giving spirit seems to be much higher as many in the community have been generous in their support.
The fireworks display takes place Saturday, July 31, at VaJoWa Golf Course, with a rain date of Aug. 7.
The theme for this year’s parade is “Family and Friends, Together Again,” which can be interpreted in a variety of ways for float decorations.
