MONTICELLO, Maine — Motorists looking to travel through the community of Monticello should take note that a section of U.S. Route 1 will be closed Saturday, July 31, to allow for the town’s 175th celebration.
A town parade will take place starting at 10 a.m. at the intersection of U.S. Route 1 and the Hoyt and Fletcher roads and continue southbound on U.S. Route 1 to the Silver and Church Street intersection near the Monticello Wesleyan Church.
Both northbound and southbound traffic will be blocked during the parade. Because the one-mile parade route passes over the bridge along the North Branch of the Meduxnekeag River, with no alternative route, the town had to acquire permission from the Maine Department of Transportation to hold its parade.
Additional events will be held throughout the day to commemorate the town’s 175th anniversary.
