100 Years Ago – Aug. 10, 1921
Headed for state exams — Simpson Bowles of Leighton and Feeny’s Drug Store left Tuesday morning for Augusta where he will take the State Examinations in Pharmacy.
Pastor moves to Oakfield — Rev. H.G. Kennedy of Old Town, formerly the Pastor of the Baptist Church in Houlton, has accepted a new position as Pastor of the Baptist Church in Oakfield.
75 Years Ago – Aug. 7, 1946
Deputy Sheriff’s Association meets — Sheriff Jasper Lycette and Deputy Sheriff Jerry Scoville of Houlton attended the meeting of the Deputy Sheriff’s Association of Aroostook, held in Bridgewater Monday night. 26 Deputies were present. A chicken supper was served after the meeting.
Rec Department serves more than 6,000 — Director of Recreation Robert Hunter announced today that after the first complete month of operation, the Department has served a grand total of 6327 individuals in supervised activities. Activities include swimming, tennis, trotting parks and more.
50 Years Ago – Aug. 10, 1971
Police photo lab — The Town Council has authorized manager Tom Willard to apply to the Law Enforcement Planning and Assistance Agency for grant funding to establish a photo lab for the Houlton Police Department. The estimated cost to set up and equip the lab will be $5,226.
First-time kindergarten — Kindergarten classes will be offered in SAD 70 and School Union 117 for the first time when classes begin later this month, according to Superintendent Llyod Chase. The availability of kindergarten classes is the result of a cooperative effort between the district and the union.
25 Years Ago – Aug. 7, 1996
Monticello celebration — Jay Brewer, co-chairperson of the Monticello Sesquicentennial Celebration, has nothing but great praise to to describe the total celebration, and he gives all the credit to a terrific group of committee members who turned up for meeting after meeting throughout last year to make this celebration a gigantic success.
Takes BPW presidency — Joyce Fitzpatrick of Houlton was installed as the new president of Maine’s Business and Professional Women in June. She is the fourth Houlton woman to hold that office. Fitzpatrick said her philosophy ro holding office is to help women appreciate the opportunities that are available to them.
