WESTFIELD, Maine — A Houlton man escaped injury Sunday morning when the trailer he was hauling overturned into a ditch.
Calvin Miller, 56, was hauling a 20-foot enclosed trailer behind his 2006 GMC Sierra pickup, headed north on Route 1 in Westfield, just after 9:30 on the morning of Sept. 12. The trailer began to swerve, likely due to a combination of grooved pavement, faulty trailer brakes and a pickup too small to haul a trailer of that size, Maine State Police said.
The swerving caused Miller to lose control of his vehicle. He crossed the center line, the truck and trailer making a 180-degree turn, and the trailer flipped over and landed in a ditch beside the road. Miller’s pickup also left the road but remained upright.
Both the truck and trailer suffered extensive damage, but Miller was uninjured, police said.
Investigating Trooper Ryan Kilcollins discovered Miller was operating with a Florida license currently under suspension. Miller was summonsed for operating a vehicle without a license.
