PRESQUE ISLE, Maine – The Presque Isle golf team gets to host this year’s Penobscot Valley Conference tournament on Sept. 25, and a top-three showing in that event will put the Wildcats into the Class B states at Natanis Golf Club in Vassalboro in October.

Coach Peter Coffin’s Wildcats should be competitive with eight players returning from last season.

“Their scores are lower than last year and they continue to improve every day,” said the third-year coach.

In that group of veterans are seniors Jackson Maynard, Ben Duprey and Wilson Saucier, along with sophomores Jack Boone, Gavin Dunleavy, Owen MacKinnon, Grant Stubbs and Morgan House.

Maynard, Boone, Dunleavy and MacKinnon hold the top four positions and Coffin said any of the four are capable of surging into the No. 1 slot for the Wildcats. Stubbs and Duprey are also among the squad’s top players along with Tyler Farnham, who is new to the team, and freshman Ean Roy and Charles Peers.

Freshmen Noah Parmalee, Dan White and Tyler Dean round out the roster.

Coffin said Presque Isle Country Club features a strong youth program, making it a good feeder system for the varsity team.

“They play every Sunday throughout the summer and [PICC’s director of golf and general manager] Matt Madore and the volunteers run a strong program,” he said. “There are also morning lessons every Friday for children up to grade 8.”

The Wildcats last won the PVC championship in 2011. Coffin said he feels Presque Isle is capable of being a top team in the league for years to come.

“The key to a successful program is having kids that play in the summer and put the time in on their own,” he added.
