100 Years Ago – Sept. 28, 1921
Legal matters — Harry Excel of Jersey City, New Jersey, representing Manufacturers Liability Insurance, is in town on a legal matter with Charles P. Barnes of Houlton and Cyrus Small of New Sweden.
New showroom coming — A portion of the building on Mechanic Street owned by the Houlton Repair and Machine Company is being fitted for a new showroom for the local agent of the Mars Hill Motor Company, and when completed a full line of Dodge cars will be displayed.
75 Years Ago – Sept. 25, 1946
Emerson heads druggists — Ralph Emerson of Island Falls was elected president of the Maine Pharmaceutical Association at the annual convention held this week in Poland Springs. Mr. Emerson has been vice president of the organization for the past year and succeeds Harry Hanson of Portland.
RN to lead hospital — Miss Helen Tuney, RN, has been appointed superintendent of the Aroostook General Hospital. Miss Turney graduated from the Aroostook Hospital in 1931 and has done general duty at the institution until the past years when she was an operating supervisor.
50 Years Ago – Sept. 28, 1971
Demonstration — Beth Pond of Patten showed the effects of static electricity during a demonstration sponsored by the Atomic Energy Commission at Katahdin High School.
Funds for a new hospital — Houlton Regional Hospital has made a formal application for federal funds under the Hill-Burton Act to aid in construction of a new hospital that will replace Madigan Memorial and Aroostook General Hospitals.
25 Years Ago – Sept. 25, 1996
Oakfield preps for centennial — Next year will mark the 100th birthday of Oakfield. The folks there are lending their time and materials to make the event special. The first project will be renovating the bandstand. Leroy Hershey donated his labor to the 84-year-old bandstand to preserve a piece of history. Local merchants donated supplies for the job. New officers — The Insurance Association of Greater Houlton has installed its new officers for the 1996-97 year. They are Vicki Carpenter, vice president; Marjorie Graham, treasurer; Joyce Fitzpatrick, president; and Lois Haggerty, secretary. The State Convention for Insurance Women is now being planned for Oct. 4-6 in Houlton.
