PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Northern Maine Community College’s automotive technology program received a new mobile tire/wheel lift from the Maine Automobile Dealers Association. This new equipment is the same being used in many dealerships, specialist tire stores, and auto repair shops. It represents the benchmark for quality in the field.
According to instructor Bob Kaiser, “The rechargeable mobile tire lift is used to support wheel weight during the removal and installation process.” Due to the increase in tire and wheel weight, the industry has seen an increase in injuries, due to lifting. Kaiser stated, “This unit has a 200-pound capacity, thus reducing possible injuries.”
NMCC offers an associate’s degree program in automotive technology as well as a 9-month professional certificate program.Students learn all vehicle systems including engine repair, electronics, heating and air conditioning, brakes, drivetrain, and axles, and innovative technologies such as hybrid propulsion – to name a selection. Graduates are eligible to take the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) student certification exam upon completion of the program.
