Bird Season Is Open - - Roger Lee (Left) and his hunting partner, Al Williams, took their limit of four birds on the first day of hunting season last Friday. They took their pheasants while hunting on the Seeley Farm, one of the areas stocked by the Houlton Fish and Game Club which put out over 1250 birds this fall in the State’s matching program. Roger was hunting with his eight year old English Pointer “Boots,” while Al had his three year old Irish Setter “Missy.” The two dogs put up 15 - 20 birds during the morning hunt. 100 Years Ago – Oct. 13, 1921

Good minstrel show — Guy Bros. Minstrel Show, the old reliable entertainers, gave one of their best performances at the Temple Theater Monday night. The theater was packed despite the stormy weather. The band and orchestra were the best they’ve heard in years.

Large apple crop — Prospects are for a bumper apple crop in Maine with more than double the production of last year. Estimates have the crop at 550,000 barrels. Houlton farmers all report an above-average harvest of apples.

75 Years Ago – Oct. 9, 1946

Lions plan celebration for Halloween — Houlton’s young people of all ages are to be guests at a big Halloween celebration October 31 sponsored by the Houlton Lion’s Club in cooperation with Robert Hunter, director of recreation. 

World Series — Murdock McKay, Lester Baker, Dr. J.A. Donovan, and Francis Pierce are among those from Houlton who are attending the World Series, which is being held in Boston this week.

50 Years Ago -Oct. 13, 1971

Beauty and flavor — Miss Martha Getchell of Limestone, 1971 Miss Potato Queen, exemplified beauty and charm during her appearance at the Maine Department of Agriculture’s exhibit at the Eastern States Expo in West Springfield, Mass. The lovely Miss Getchell represented Maine’s number one crop, potatoes, with its theme, “The  Maine Difference is Flavor.”

Aboard the Queen Mary — Everett Lenentine of Monticello was a recent visitor to the Queen Mary at her berth in the Port of Long Beach, California. While serving as delegate to the National Postmasters Convention in Anaheim, California. The Queen Mary is open for tours seven days a week and offers three banquet rooms, restaurants, shops and convention facilities.

25 Years Ago – Oct. 9, 1996

Bell tower gets new home — The old fire bell tower which had been resting atop the Town Office found a new home in Pierce Park. The Town Office is about to receive a new roof and officials thought the tower was worth saving and relocating to the park.

Cancer walk draws 150 — The Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Three Mile Move Along  Marathon for northern Maine was held in Houlton Sunday, Oct. 6. The American Cancer Society event, sponsored by Health 1st and chaired by John Dunn of Dunn Funeral Home and Connie Hagan of F.A. Peabody, raised more than $8,000 for breast cancer research awareness and early detection in Maine. Over 150 people met in Houlton to take part.
