HOULTON, Maine — The Houlton Lodge of Elks No. 835 held its annual Hoop Shoot foul shooting contest Sunday, Dec. 12, at the Houlton Recreation Department. This year’s event saw a smaller than normal group of contestants, but it was enough to hold the competition.
Boys and girls ranging in ages from 8 to 13 participated in three different age categories. Each competitor completed two separate rounds, with each contestant attempting a total of 25 foul shots. The winner was determined to be the foul shooter in each age category and division with the greatest number of successful foul shots.
In the event of a tie, shoot-offs of five additional foul shot attempts by each of the tied competitors are held until a winner emerges.
Winners for the event were: 8-9 boys, Ryder Holdsworth of Caribou; 10-11 boys, Kemper Hipsley of Houlton; 12-13 boys, Logan Sherman of Hodgdon; and 12-13 girls, Victoria Ervin of Houlton.
Also participating were Sawyer Knowles of Houlton; Raiden Cochran of Easton; and Kody Richardson of Ludlow.
The winners in each age category and division are eligible to compete in the District Hoop Shoot to be held on Sunday, Jan. 16, at the James Doughty School, 143 5th Street in Bangor at 10 a.m. Statewide, New England and National Hoop Shoot competitions follow.
