Tuttle’s spelling prowess shines at GHCA

HOULTON, Maine — The Greater Houlton Christian Academy crowned a repeat spelling champion Thursday, Jan. 27, as eighth-grader Stephanie Tuttle captured the crown for the second straight year.

Tuttle bested a field of just five spellers from grades 6-8 at the Christian school. A winner was not determined until the 14th round.

The eighth-grader successfully spelled the word “topologically” in the championship round to earn the title. Pastor Randall Burns once again served as the pronouncer.

Lydia Han, a sixth-grader, finished as runner-up. Both are eligible to participate in the Aroostook County Spelling Bee.

The County Spelling Bee is traditionally held at the University of Maine at Fort Kent, but the college has declined to host the event this year because of COVID-19. The event was slated to be held Feb. 10, but may now be held virtually if another site cannot be acquired.

Others participating in the bee were: Kylah Tuttle, Brooklyn Philbrook and Cole Watson.
