Special recognition was recently given to Mapleton Lion Steve Hanning, left, who was named the 2012 Lion of the Year for his many hours of volunteer work on projects and helping with the club’s fundraising. Hanning has served as club president and has been the long-time chair of the Memorial Day Parade and Remembrance Ceremony. He has worked tirelessly on the renovation of the Mapleton Lions Hall and assures the town’s Christmas lights are working properly each holiday season. Presenting Hanning with a plaque acknowledging his faithfulness and commitment to the Mapleton Lions Club and the communities is Vice President Allen Salo.

Budget info meeting

Town Manager Jon Frederick will be hosting the 2014 Budget Information Session Monday, Feb. 10 at 7 p.m. in the Town Office Conference Room. This will be a great opportunity to learn about the budget and ask questions prior to the town meetings in March. The session is open to the public and all are encouraged to attend. The 2014 budget and its supporting document are available on the towns’ website, www.mapleton.me. Please call 764-3754 with questions.

Planet Head Day

The eighth annual Planet Head Day will be held Saturday, Feb. 15 at Wieden Hall on the University of Maine at Presque Isle campus from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Those interested in having their heads shaved are encouraged to get pledges for the Caring Area Neighbors for Cancer Education and Recovery (C.A.N.C.E.R.). Volunteers from Parsons Street Barber Shop and Great Beginnings Hair Salon will be shaving heads during the event. Others wishing to have their heads painted can wear a “bald” cap and volunteers will paint heads like your favorite planet, dwarf planet or moon.
For the first time, the younger visitors will have the chance to do some craft making. Crafts created during the day will be placed in the group’s Bread of Life bags that get delivered every month to patients in treatment. Door prizes will be given out every half-hour and a 50/50 drawing will be held. Presque Isle and Caribou Pizza Hut restaurants will be providing free pizza throughout the afternoon event.
If you would like to make a donation, but cannot attend this event, checks can be mailed to C.A.N.C.E.R., P.O. Box 811, Presque Isle, Maine 04769. If you have any questions, please call Louise Calabrese at 764-0766.
