This past month we have received so many phone calls for cats needing help. One such cat is Nick, who was living outside in below zero temperatures. He was being fed by a very kind individual who was really worried about him.
He came to her house everyday without fail for food. Once he ate, we are not really sure where he went for shelter. It was clear that Nick was in need of medical attention. His ears were half gone due to frostbite and his head had some really bad sores just below his ears.
A trap was set, but Nick was smart and would not go in. After a couple of weeks, he finally decided he wanted the food bad enough and went in. The door closed and Nick was saved. Shortly thereafter he was brought to the Ark. We had been anticipating his arrival and had a crate all set for him. For the first time in who knows how long Nick was in where it was safe and warm.
Nick does not realize just yet that we are trying to help him and that his life is about to get a whole lot better. That is OK. We are very patient and will do whatever we need to to help Nick.
Another cat is Ellie Mae. One morning it was minus-27 and Ellie Mae decided to go to a house for help. She sat out on the doorstep for hours crying to get in. The lady fed her and she gobbled it down. We were called for help, we agreed to take her. Ellie Mae is very sweet and should never have been outside in that kind of cold. Sadly no one ever came to claim Ellie Mae. We are told that her owner moved and left her behind. She is now at the Sanctuary where she will be well taken care of.
With these cold winter temperatures no cat or dog should be left outside. They need food and shelter. They need responsible owners to look out for them. When you go outside and it is too cold for you to stay out just remember your pet is cold too, bring them inside!
