TAMC Goes Red Friday as part of
national heart disease awareness campaign
Employees at TAMC will be seeing — and wearing — red this Friday, Feb. 7 as part of the American Heart Association’s national “Go Red for Women” campaign.
February is American Heart Month and the American Heart Association (AHA) has designated the first Friday of February as National Wear Red Day to raise awareness of heart disease, which is the number-one killer of women nationwide. In fact, it takes more lives each year than all forms of cancer combined. The first National Wear Red Day was in 2003, and the AHA’s website says, “The red dress has become the iconic symbol of [their] battle against heart disease in women.”
“As a health care organization, we believe it is important to join both the global and local community in raising awareness about health issues that impact our friends and neighbors,” said TAMC President/CEO Sylvia Getman. “We are so pleased that a growing number of County businesses and organizations also join in this special day and encourage their employees to wear red.”
TAMC employees are taking this year’s Go Red campaign one step farther — going beyond just wearing red and actually decorating their departments accordingly all in the name of heart health. The employees will then photograph their decorations to be shared on the TAMC Facebook page and in their internal newsletter, The Pulse.
The special all-day event will include a heart healthy meal in the cafeteria, along with helpful information and heart healthy recipes for employees to take with them. Money is being raised through TAMC’s Casual for the Cause program and any donations during the event will support TAMC Cardiac Care and the AHA.
TAMC will end February with another “Red Dress” event — this one open to participants from the community. An annual employee event called the Red Dress Race and Polar Dip will be expanded to include interested community members. The relay race — of sorts — involves a two-person team — one who wears a red dress and runs around the A.R. Gould Memorial campus on Academy Street, and a partner who follows the runner by taking a dip into a large pool of ice water.
The Red Dress Race and Polar Dip event will be held Friday, Feb. 28. More information on the event and how to register will be released to the public soon.
