PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The Presque Isle Elks Lodge No. 1954 recently donated $2,000 to Catholic Charities Maine to help provide food for local people in need.
The funds were generated by an Elks National Foundation Spotlight Grant, originally intended to assist previously homeless veterans in furnishing them a permanent home. But on account of the shortage of housing in this area, the group was unable to expend the funds for that purpose.
The Elks obtained authority to utilize those funds in order to address the growing food insecurity in this area, which affects thousands of military veterans. To accomplish this purpose, they donated the entire amount of the $2,000 grant to Catholic Charities of Maine to provide food for those in need.
A group of Elks members, who are military veterans themselves, met with Dixie Shaw, director of hunger and relief services for the charity, to present the donation. Included were Laurence Shorette, Terry Plummer, Jim Gehring, Carl Olson and Moe Collins.
