75 Years Ago – March 27, 1947
New Western Auto store opens — Bringing to Houlton one of the famous home-owned and operated Western Auto Associate Stores. Vaughan Bates, owner, has set the opening date of his attractive new store at 18 Bangor St. for Saturday, March 29. Merchandise featured in his store is from Western Auto Supply company, a nationally-known merchandising organization which has for many years backed up the quality of their merchandise and their values with the guarantee of “Satisfaction or your money back.”
Sophomores win championship — The Sophomores, coached by Martin Smith, won the intramural basketball championship Monday afternoon when they defeated the Sluggers, a team composed of Juniors, 24-19. This was a close game all the way with the Sophomores pulling out front in the final minutes of the game. The members of the championship team were Captain Eber Currier, Wilber White, Ralph Tozier, Jack Daniels, John Faulkner, Raymond Hardy, Frank Totman and Richard Daley.
50 Years Ago – March 29, 1972
Linneus school spelling champ — Judy Turney, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Turney of Linneus and a sixth grade student at Roosevelt school in Linneus, has won the spelling championship for Union 117.
Parks completes Army basic training — Army Private John E. Parks, son of Mr. and Mrs. William J. Palmer of Smyrna Mills, recently completed eight weeks of basic training at the U.S. Army Training Center, Infantry, Ft. Dix, New Jersey. He received instruction in drill and ceremonies, weapons, map reading, combat tactics, military courtesy, military justice, first aid and Army history and traditions.
25 Years Ago – April 9, 1997
Best among nation’s foul shooters — A Smyrna girl has made her mark among the best foul shooters in the nation. Nine-year-old Mallory Malone, daughter of Larry and Gail Malone of Smyrna, finished fourth in the Elks New England Foul Shooting contest held in Springfield, Massachusetts.
Guard enlists local citizens — Andrew B. Tapley of Monticello and Troy A. Fitzpatrick of Houlton are now members of the Maine Army National Guard’s Battery B 1st Battalion, 152nd Field Artillery in Houlton. Tapley and Fitzpatrick are high school juniors at Houlton High School. Tapley is the son of Brent and Susan Tapley of Monticello, and Fitzpatrick is the son of Roy and Patricia Pinard of Houlton. Both will serve as Cannon Crewmembers with the Unit and will attend basic training beginning on June 19, 1997, at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma. Tapley and Fitzpatrick will begin training with their unit in April.
