75 Years Ago – May 1, 1947
Four Presque Isle insurance agents in “Round Table” — Four Presque Isle life insurance agents were among the 36 in Maine who qualified for membership in the Maine Quarter Million Dollar Round Table, according to an announcement by Heinz B. Koenig, chairman of the membership committee.
The Presque Isle members of the Quarter Million Dollar Round Table were: Lloyd S. Greenlaw (New England Mutual Life); Maxwell M. Hayden (Prudential Insurance Co.); Sue Valentine Thompson (Union Central); and Lewis A. Willard (New York Life Insurance Co.).
Harold P. Perkins accepted a position with Norway Bank — Harold P. Perkins of this city, vice president of the Northern National Bank of Presque Isle, who had been acting as manager of the bank’s Madawaska branch, had resigned to accept a position as cashier of the Norway (Maine) National Bank. Mr. Perkins, a former secretary of the Federal Land Bank in Springfield, Mass., completed his duties at Madawaska.
50 Years Ago – May 3, 1972
Ronee Desmond named 1972 Miss Mapleton — Eighteen-year-old Ronnee Desmond was selected as Miss Mapleton 1972 Friday evening, April 28, before about 350 individuals at the Higgins Elementary School in Mapleton. Alena Clark, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Clark, was named first runner up. Miss Congeniality, chosen by the Miss Mapleton contestants, was Annette Turner, 17, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Turner. There were eight young ladies, all seniors at Presque Isle High School, vying for the title of Miss Mapleton.
Star City got Maples — Over 62 Crimson King and Norway Maple trees were delivered to the home of Mrs. David Griffiths on Third Street on Monday, May 1. It took one of the Highway Commission’s bright yellow trucks to safely deliver the maples, which were brought to Aroostook from out of state. Mrs. David Flewelling of the Garden Club; Mrs. David Griffiths, chairman of the Community Beautification Committee; and Mrs. Norman Varnum, Garden Club president, received the trees from the delivery men. The maples were delivered to local residents who purchased the trees.
25 Years Ago – April 30, 1997
Ground breaking — The Grant Memorial United Methodist Church held a groundbreaking ceremony Sunday afternoon at the future site of their new congregation located on Fleetwood Street. Construction on the new facility was set to begin as soon as weather conditions allowed. The project was slated for completion on Dec. 15. According to church spokesperson Mike McPherson, donations for the rebuilding effort came from across the nation. The congregation’s original church burned to the ground in January of 1996.
Logan honored — The Fort Fairfield Chamber of Commerce announced that they have chosen John Logan of the Maine Potato Board to be featured in their commemorative booklet celebrating the 50th Annual Maine Potato Blossom Festival. This booklet was dedicated to Logan in appreciation for his many years of dedication to the Maine potato industry. He was also honored at the Annual Industry Dinner held at the Dick Shaw Potato House in Fort Fairfield.
