Image   AUBURN – Margaret Dawn Geraghty, 85, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2007 at Androscoggin Hospice House after a long decline from Alzheimer’s Disease. It was a peaceful passing with her loving daughters by her side.
She was born on Jan. 9, 1922, in Presque Isle, the daughter of potato farmer Jerry D. and Una (Scott) Glidden, who operated a farm on the Parkhurst (Brewer) Road for many years. She had many happy memories growing up across the street from her best friends, Marilyn (Parkhurst) Bonifant and Carolyn (Parkhust) Cameron.
After graduating from Presque Isle High School, she received a degree in occupational therapy at Westbrook College in Gorham. She met her husband Larry Geraghty during World War II at a USO dance in Presque Isle.
They married after the war and settled in Westbrook, where her husband built a successful career as a news broadcaster for WCSH-TV. Peg raised her three children, Laurie, Shawn and Gail with the same values of decent living she learned from her parents.
Her family moved to a farmhouse in Windham in 1968, where she and Larry began a used and rare book business out of their large barn.
After Larry’s death in 1985, Peg sold the house and business and moved to Ft. Myers, Fla., where she spent 12 of the happiest years of her life. She was an active volunteer at the Unity Church of Ft. Myers, where she found spiritual peace and fulfillment.
She had a sweet smile and cherished life, and went about her life without complaint. Peg was generous and kind, dedicated to her friends and family, and full of love.
Her loving spirit shone through even after she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease in 2000. The nursing home staff came to love their “Peggy.”
She is survived by her daughters, Gail Geraghty and Laurie Ellis; a brother, Philip Glidden; nieces Madeline and Catherine Glidden; grandchildren Brian Ellis, Toby Geraghty and Bonnie Geraghty; great-grandson Cameron; aunt Doris Lowry; and cousins Dorothy Blake, Delores Roix and Helen York.
She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, her son Shawn, and aunts and uncles.
A committal service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Fairmont Cemetery in Presque Isle.
