115 Years Ago – June 13, 1907
Accepted a new position — John Trusty, who has been working in Washburn for a year or so, has accepted a position as meat cutter in Tornquist Brothers grocery and meat market.
Electric Motor Installed — Mrs. N.M. Lowney has recently installed an electric motor in her store for the purpose of turning her ice cream freezers.
100 Years Ago – June 15, 1922
Accepted manager position — Arthur Lister, who recently returned from Portland where he had been sick for some time with rheumatic fever, has accepted a position as Aroostook County manager for the John P. Squires Co. of Chicago; an important position, but one which will be filled very acceptably, however, by Mr. Lister.
Good Samaritan — While in Presque Isle one day recently Warren Doe, who had stopped to help some ladies change tires on their automobile, was run into by a careless driver and knocked down, fortunately, however, not being seriously injured. We suppose there will always be some careless people in the world, else there would not be so many needless accidents.
75 Years Ago – June 12, 1947
Lobster order delivered here by plane — Nearly 300 pounds of Eastport lobsters were landed at the local airport Tuesday by the Caribou Flying Service to establish one of the first air freight shipments here for several years. Pilot John MacKinnon made the flight to Eastport and returned within three hours, delivering the lobsters here where they were cooked and delivered to Fort Fairfield on time for the Masonic banquet.
Caribou-Limestone Sponsor Banquet for Retiring Superintendent — Approximately 130 teachers and townspeople of the Caribou-Limestone School District paid their respects to Mr. and Mrs. James A. Hamlin, at a banquet held in the high school gymnasium. Mr. Hamlin, who had been superintendent of the school here for the past seven years, is retiring from the profession this summer.
25 Years Ago – June 11, 1997
New food kitchen — Pat Hodgges, Dawn Jacobs, Kevin Lagasse, Jeff Frost, Cheryl Lewandowski and Mark Trimble recently celebrated the opening of the latest food kitchen in Caribou with a dedication and a ribbon cutting. Representatives of the Caribou Ecumenical Food Pantry, located on Sweden Street to get the kitchen up and running in response to the ‘need of hungry people throughout the community.’ Run by five local churches, this new food pantry will rely on volunteers in the community to keep things going.
Maine School Nurse of the Year — One of Caribou’s school nurses has been named as the state of Maine’s school nurse for this year. Chris Hamilton, a resident of Caribou was honored by the Maine Association of School Nurses for her hard work with students, the school and the community.
