PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Residents of low-income housing joined officials from the Presque Isle Housing Authority in creating snow sculptures for a recent contest hosted by The Aroostook Medical Center and the Central Aroostook Chamber of Commerce. PIHA authorities said the event served as another way to promote community spirit among tenants.
“We’re trying to build a neighborhood community and part of that is providing opportunities for community participation. That’s why I entered the Presque Isle Housing Authority into the snow sculpture contest,” said Jennifer Trombley, PIHA executive director.
The organization’s entry had a global theme, featuring an array of national flags.
“‘Welcome the World’ was our snow sculpture entry. Our design plan was to build a globe version of the world, paint it up and surround it by a field of snow people,” said Trombley.
Trombley said though weather conditions weren’t ideal, participants had fun creating the sculpture.
“The weather cooperated some, although the rain, sun and then cold disrupted some of our plans. Resident Honey McKenney assisted in the creation. She and her children were instrumental in getting the sculpture done,” said Trombley.
“This project was a great community-building experience,” Trombley said.
