PRESQUE ISLE – The Presque Isle Middle School was evacuated Tuesday morning, following a bomb scare.
The Presque Isle Police Department were notified of the incident at approximately 11:30 a.m. Sept. 18. School officials moved quickly to evacuate the building, moving all students to a safe location. Superintendent Gehrig Johnson was out of his office until Friday and unavailable for comment. Office staff indicated they’d been notified by school officials of the threat earlier, had contacted police and were waiting for the officers to arrive.
Chief Naldo Gagnon, of the PIPD, was able to confirm how the school was informed of the threat.
“A note was found at the school. The investigation is continuing at the scene at this time,” said Gagnon, via cell phone from the school at approximately 12:30 p.m.
Dave Sowers, operations manager for SAD 1, confirmed the building had been evacuated but had no additional information at presstime.
“All I know is they’re (PIMS) experiencing a bomb scare,” said Sowers.
Officials weren’t certain if students would return to classes or whether they’d be sent home.
“I’m not sure if the students will come back to the building today or not. It’s nearing dismissal time, so they (school officials) may opt to send students home for the day,” said Gagnon.
A message on the SAD 1 Web site, www.sad1.org, confirmed school was dismissed at 1 p.m. due to a bomb scare.
