PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Children looking to use the pool at the University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Gentile Hall must have parental permission before doing so, according to Councilor Craig Green.
“I spoke to a family who went to UMPI this weekend. Their child had a friend along. Because that child’s parents weren’t there, the child was turned around and asked to leave,” said Green at Monday’s council meeting.
He said while the facility is open to the public during free-swim time, permission is required for minor children to use the facility.
“I know it’s their policy — whether it’s a signed note or phone call or something — it’s still hard to explain to an 8-year-old they have to go home,” said Green.
“We need to put this in a news story that children need an authorization form signed to go to the indoor pool now,” said Green.
“Do it once and it’s good for a long time,” added Councilor Pete Hallowell.
