75 Years Ago – August 7, 1947
On first voyage — James Cyr, son of Mr. and Mrs. Homer E. Cyr of this city, sailed from New York as third engineer of the American Export Lines’ Southwestern Victory, bound for India.
He received his Maritime Service and Commission as ensign in the U.S. Naval Reserve in June when he graduated from the Maine Maritime Academy at Castine, receiving the second highest rank in his class. While at the academy, he was a member of the orchestra and band, playing in many foreighn ports while on cruises as a midshipman. He was also a section leader during his last year at Castine.
New supervisors for the playground at Fairview acres — Mrs. Martha Morrissette and Miss Avis Zippel, both of this city, will alternate as supervisors of the children’s recreation program at Fairview Acres, according to an announcement at a meeting of the Tenants Council. They succeeded Miss Marjorie Glidden, who resigned as supervisor of the playground project.
Queen greeted queen — Miss Jacqueline Gates, queen of Augusta’s sesquicentennial celebration, and Mayor Charles P. Nelson of Augusta, greeted Miss Betty Green of Presque Isle at the Augusta airport, where the Maine Potato Blossom Queen landed en route to East Boothbay to be guest of honor at the Boothbay Fisherman’s Fair.
50 Years Ago – August 9, 1972
Area towns joined Maine Community Betterment Program — Four Star-Herald area towns were among 22 Maine towns to be welcomed into the Maine Community Betterment Program at the MCB awards banquet Aug. 3. Receiving plaques at the third annual MCB banquet in Augusta were the Central Aroostook towns of Ashland, Blaine, Mapleton and Washburn. Commissioner James K. Keefe of the Maine Department of Commerce and Industry, sponsoring agency for MCB, handed the new membership citation to town managers, Edward Gagnon of Mapleton and Milford H. Blackstone of Washburn. It was announced that 91 Maine towns participated in the MCB project.
Two attended WH & FM Convention — The 25th annual convention of the Eastern Regional WH and FM Society was held at Alton Ray, NH. Representing the State Road Advent Christian Church were delegates Joanne Tompkins and Hazel Cameron. The convention started off with a banquet and included morning devotions, business sessions, a memorial service, a discussion on past history and afternoon fellowship. Speakers included Laura Putnam, a missionary from the Philippines, and Mrs. Nelson Elliot. The convention’s theme was “All things through Christ.”
25 Years Ago – August 6, 1997
On strike — UPS employees in Presque Isle joined union members throughout the nation Monday by going on strike. Approximately 30 union employees have been picketing the Presque Isle UPS facility around the clock. Campers and tents have been set up across from the facility, which is located in the Industrial Park.
MHCC twilight league leaders — Twilight League standings at Mars Hill Country Club following play on July 22 were as follows: First place, Time Brewer and Terry Brewer, 20 points; second, Tom Trafford and Harry Orser, 18-½ points; third, Steve Stiles and Chappy Clark, 17-½ points. Early Bird League standings were: first place, Paul Wise and Bob Mahan, 43 points; second, Charlie Mountain and Phil Lawrence, 38 points; third, Wayne Cushman and Herschel Smith, 36 points.
Check presentation — The Social Service, Utility Management and Quality Management departments of The Aroostook Medical Center (TAMC) donated $150 in proceeds from a wash to the United Way of Aroostook. The money was earmarked for the hospital’s Hematology/Oncology departments.
Science award — Nancy Jackson, Maine Public Service energy education adviser, presented a traveling plaque and $300 check to science instructor Eric Hendrickson and Principal Frank Keenan to be used for science equipment as their school. The presentation was made on behalf of Melissa Hendrickson, who won the 1997 Maine Public Service Company Science and Energy Scholarship contest.
