What happened to the idea of community?

To the editor:
In the past, families and children, rich and poor, swam in the outdoor pool. Presque Isle has high living expenses and 15 percent unemployment. Those of us who are low income cannot afford UMPI’s Gentile Hall Pool.

Dick Graves’ letter of March 19 brought up some issues that could have saved the outdoor pool for continued summer community use. The Presque Isle residents should have been included in the outdoor pool renovation discussions. Presque Isle mobilized for the Biathlon’s success. The Presque Isle residents should also have been included in the decision to hire a second city manager.
As Dick Graves pointed out about the City Council, “Do what the vast majority of local taxpayers would have you do; save oodles of dollars by fixing up the old outdoor pool and at the same time scale down to only one city manager.”
Thank you, firemen and policeman who were laid off by the city. Thank you, Dick Graves.
