WASHBURN, Maine — Six sophomores and two freshmen will be part of the starting lineup when the Beaver girls open their soccer season Monday, Aug. 15, in St. Agatha against the defending Class D North champion Wisdom Pioneers.
First-year coach Glen Condon has taken over for Marcie Barbarula and inherits an inexperienced roster, which also includes four eighth-graders. Condon has 17 years of soccer coaching experience — six with the Ashland boys varsity and the other 11 with the Ashland middle school boys.
Last year, the Washburn girls team posted a 1-12 overall record.
“My goal is for the girls to get competitive again and regain confidence,” Condon said. “We need solid teamwork and commitment from everybody.”
The lone senior starters will be defenders Jasmine West and Emily Coy. Both players bring leadership, toughness and commitment to the squad, according to Condon.
Junior Chelsea Hobbs is another key veteran who will handle one of the midfield slots.
The large sophomore contingent includes goalkeeper Hannah Scott, backs Izzabelle Allen and Logan Curtis, midfielders Madison Elliot and Brooklyn Worsley and forward Madelyn Johnson.
Elliot was the team’s starting goalkeeper last year. The coach said she brings skill and physical presence to her new role. Condon said Johnson owns great field vision and excels in ball placement.
Jaici Rosi-Carney, a freshman, is capable of playing multiple positions, but gets the start at forward, along with classmate Hailey Cote. Both are very quick and skilled, according to the coach.
Rounding out the 18-player roster are seniors Lucy Tate and Heidi Echeverria, who are first-year players; sophomore Madison Coy and eighth-graders Haleigh Archer, Haily Campbell, Hanna Clapper and Katie Mendoza.
Cheyenne Farley is the manager and Crystal Hobbs is Condon’s assistant coach.
“We’ve been working a lot on defense,” Condon said. “Overall this team is young, but I believe the girls have a lot of talent and potential for the future.”
