PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Smiling faces were abundant at the Shriners Building on the Houlton Road March 12, as Shriners and members of the Presque Isle Snowmobile Club hosted this year’s Fun Day event, giving snowmobile rides to clients of the Central Aroostook Association, followed by a luncheon inside.
“It was a huge success again this year. We had great snow conditions and the snowmobile trail held very well due to the cold weather we had weeks before,” said Dave Steeves, event organizer and member of the PISC.
Steeves said it takes several volunteers to pull off such an activity.
“Although it is the Snowmobile Club that coordinates the event, it is a group effort — with assistance from the staff at Aroostook State Park, the Maine Warden Service, Maine Forestry Service, Homemakers Extension and others,” he said.
“With all the help, it is important to keep everyone’s energy level up. That’s done with the generous donations of food and beverages from local businesses, as well as homemade goodies from the Extension,” said Steeves.
Dozens turned out for the fun-filled day.
“We had at least 125 people take part, enjoying the rides and great food. Participants look forward to this all year long,” said Pam Powers, director of adult services with the CAA. She said clients also look forward to summer, when the Star City ATV Club hosts another day of fun, featuring ATV rides and food.
“I like skidooing. I do this every year,” said Lisa Jones.
Kent Stevens has enjoyed this event for several years.
“I went out on the sleds two or three times. It’s fun,” said Stevens.
Alan Cleaves, an ASP ranger, said he’s been volunteering for several years and looks forward to it.
“They (participants) have so much fun. Some years it’s been cold but that doesn’t stop their enthusiasm,” said Cleaves. “This year was perfect for it.”
