The Probus Club of Aroostook met at Northern Maine Community College in Reed Commons with 15 members present and a visiting guest on Thursday, March 20.
The meeting was called to order at 10:05 a.m. by the president, Hilda Walton. The club will present a $500 scholarship to a student from Aroostook and who has completed the first-semester ranking period at NMCC. Students who are interested need to contact their guidance counselor at their high school for details on the scholarship.
A new member, Marion Gilman, was introduced along with a guest. Georgette Beaulieu gave her life history.
Carolyn Watson introduced this month’s special speaker as Steve Farnham, executive director of the Aroostook Area Agency on Aging. Mr. Farnham has been employed with the agency since 1975. He was very informative on many subjects: Medicare D drug benefits, insurance counseling, elder care, LIHEAP heating, long-term care assistance and rent refund programs in our area. He discussed in detail benefits his agency officers, and also discussed the Aging Well Living Well Expo planned for Tuesday, May 20, coordinated with AARP, Cary Medical Center, The Aroostook Medical Center, and NMCC. It involves 18-plus workshop choices, 50-plus exhibitors, music, lunch, and raffle prizes. Members were urged to register early by notifying the Aroostook Area Agency on Aging. Senior Connection members may register at half price.
Probus is the association of retired and semi-retired persons who join together in autonomous clubs throughout the world. The next meeting will be on April 17 at 10 a.m. at NMCC’s Reed Commons.
