115 Years Ago – Sept. 5, 1907

Telephone injuries — Some time ago the telephone was installed in nearly every farmhouse. Since then the women have used the phones by the hour, standing in a position which throws their heads to the left side.

The muscles of the neck do not fully recover, and half of the women walking on the streets incline their heads severely to the left side as though standing at a ‘phone’ with the receiver at their ear.

Starch company in New Sweden — The Aroostook Starch Co. has been organized in New Sweden for the purpose of manufacturing and dealing in starch, with $10,000 capital stock, of which nothing is paid in. Officers: President, Jacob Hedman of New Sweden; vice president, John Hedman; treasurer, Peter L. Youngren of New Sweden. A certificate was filed Aug. 31, 1907, through Willie B. Hall, Attorney.

100 Years Ago – Sept. 7, 1922

Inspection of bridge complete — Gov. P.E. Baxter, U.S. Senator Hale and State Attorney R.W. Shaw were in Caribou Wednesday on their return trip from an inspection of the new bridge across the St. John River at Edmundston.

Attending the opening of the bridge — A large number from Caribou attended the services at the opening of the International Bridge across the St. John River between Madawaska and Edmundston, New Brunswick, on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 4.

75 Years Ago – Sept. 4, 1947

Prize salmon — Archie Belyea of Madawaska Road displayed a prize 25-pound salmon, netted Aug. 22, while on a fishing excursion at Bristol Pool, Bristol, New Brunswick. According to Mr. Belyea, the silversides struck hard at a small fly and the ensuing battle lasted in excess of three-fourths of an hour, during most of which time the fish held the upper hand, a thrilling dream to any angling sportsman.

Work to start on High Street — Tony Ugone, superintendent, Bridge Construction Company, reported this week that work on improvement of High Street is expected to start on Monday, although surveying and running of lines would be under way toward the latter part of this week.

25 Years Ago – Sept. 3, 1997

Graduates — The Loring Fire Department strives for excellence. Continuing to increase job knowledge in the emergency field, two members of the department recently completed the new emergency medical technician intermediate course: Darren Woods and Robert Shauer. Students receive 90 academic hours of classroom instruction and 64 hours of practical clinical experience. Both individuals have passed the state exams for licensing.

Back in business — The familiar Caribou landmark, Yusef’s restaurant, is back in business on Bennett Drive after more than three years. The business celebrated its opening day this past Thursday and people eager to relive the taste stopped by to enjoy both lunch and dinner. The restaurant, which is owned by Joe Hackett, will employ close to 40 people, including the retainment of those working at Hackett’s former restaurant, Joe Hackett’s Steak and Seafood.
