Washburn High School’s Destination Imagination teams have been working hard since the beginning of the school year to solve challenges and compete in the Maine State Destination Imagination Competition.

On March 22, students from all over the state traveled to the University of Maine at Orono for the 2014 Maine state Destination Imagination Competition.
The Washburn teams had a wonderful time and showed their parents, friends and other DI participants their skills and ingenuity. Their hard work and creativity placed them in the following standings: Middle School Fine Arts Team, fifth place; High School Structural Team, third place; and High School Technical Team, first place.

The first-place Technical Team will be going to the Global Competition in Knoxville, Tenn. May 20-25, where they will be competing against teams from 33 countries. They will be visiting with representatives from NASA, 3M, the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, “National Geographic” and other companies and organizations.

Students will be working hard to raise the funds needed for transportation, registration, meals and accommodations associated through a variety of upcoming fundraisers.    Any donation would be welcome. Team members are also available for various volunteer projects, including odd jobs. If you would like to donate or have any questions about Destination Imagination, contact any of the DI members or call Tracy Reed at 455-4501 or email treed@msad45.net.

 Breakfast fundraiser

A fund-raising breakfast will be held Saturday, April 5, at the Washburn Trail Runners’ clubhouse with proceeds going to the WDHS Destination Imagination team. The breakfast will be 6:30-10 a.m., featuring pancakes, pancake bacon sticks, eggs, bacon or ham, sausage gravy and biscuits, as well as special DI donuts (croissant/donut). Price is: adults $6, children $3. All proceeds go to the team’s global competition expenses.

Dinner and Auction

The Washburn District High School physics class will be holding an Italian Dinner and Silent Auction on Friday, April 4, at the Washburn Elementary School Cafeteria. The cost will be $3 for children, $6 for adults or $15 for a family. The fundraiser is to help students attend a physics workshop in Saco that will define physics laws and concepts, while demonstrating through hands on experiences. The students will be meeting with amusement park designers, engineers, and maintenance workers. After each meeting students will experience the laws and forces of physics in action by riding and watching the roller coasters and other rides.

Kennedy Churchill will be celebrating a birthday the week of April 2-8.
