75 Years Ago – Sept. 11, 1947
Maxwell Hayden new Community Chest president — Maxwell M. Hayden was elected president of the Presque Isle Community Chest at a meeting of the board of directors, to succeed Orrin J. Bishop; and Harold Glidden was named chairman of the annual campaign for funds.
Other officers elected were: Eugene K. Rowe, first vice-president; Dr. Malcolm Harris, second vice-president; Mrs. Milton S. Blackwell, re-elected secretary; and Philip Seavey, reelected treasurer.
Candidacy endorsed — Rep. Albert Brewer of Presque Isle was unanimously endorsed as a candidate for the State Highway Commission by the nine-member highway committee appointed by the Association of Aroostook Chambers of Commerce, according to a letter sent to local Chambers of Commerce. The local C. of C. directors voted to support the appointment of an Aroostook resident to the Highway Commission.
50 Years Ago – Sept. 13, 1972
Chairemen named for Girl Scout drive — The Abnaki Girl Scout Council, serving the six northeastern counties of Maine, began its annual fund drive Sept. 11. Chairwomen of their respective towns were Mrs. Frank Sprague, Ashland; Mrs. Neil Clark, Mapleton; and Mrs. Ansel Thompson, Washburn. The fund drive was being carried out in one of three ways: a door-to-door campaign, a sustaining membership drive (special friends of the council); or a letter campaign. These drives were held in towns outside the United Fund areas. The proceeds from the drive were used to help cover the cost of various services which the council provided throughout the six northeastern counties plus a few additional towns within Somerset County. Services provided included: trained professional administration and guidance; National affiliation and charter privileges; processing of membership; community relationships services; recruitment and training of volunteers; organizing new troops; helping existing troops; initiating council wide activities; bulletins and mail contact services and many others.
Patrolling the air for 25 years — Loring Air Force Base in Limestone celebrated the Air Force’s 25th Anniversary Saturday by holding a daylong open house. Visitors had the opportunity to look over several planes on the ground and as they flew by in the air. Among the planes, there will be giant, modern B-52s and an old B-25, a World War II bomber that is older than the Air Force itself.
25 Years Ago – Sept. 10, 1997
Charitable donation — Maine Mutual Fire Insurance Company donated $3,513 to the Aroostook County Special Olympics. The money was raised through a concession booth staffed by Maine Mutual employees during the Phish concert in Limestone. Randy Keep of Maine Mutual Fire Insurance presented Steve Richard, director of OTC, the check.
Culberson was added to SAD 1 school board — The newest interim member of the SAD 1 Board of Directors is no stranger to the school board. Curtis Culberson was unanimously appointed to the school board following a closed-session interview with the Presque Isle City Council on Sept. 3.He replaced Alton Hartt who resigned to accept a job position in the Bangor area.
Falcons won opener vs. SMTC — The Northern Maine Technical College Falcons opened its season Saturday at home with an impressive 2-1 overtime victory over the previous year state champions, Southern Maine Technical College. The game-winning goal came with 9:59 remaining in the first overtime as Cory Searles scored off a Mike Norris assist. NMTC scored the game’s first goal, with Jerry Burns getting totally off a Brent Barker assist. Rick Kong of SMTC tied the game late in the second half, which set up Searles’ heroics. Bruce Lajoie, the goalkeeper for NMTC, had 15 saves on 22 shots to earn the victory.
