On Thursday, March 20, 23 students representing the Ashland District School made their way to Edmundston, New Brunswick to take part in a youth rally at the Cite des Jeunes A. M. Sormany.
The event was organized by the Cite des Jeunes student council to encourage and promote relations between high schools in the 2014 Acadian World Congress region. This event is a precursor to the Acadian World Congress Grand Youth Rally, which will take place this summer from Aug. 12-17 at Temiscouata, in the city of Pohenegamook as part of the Acadian World Congress.
During their day in Edmundston, Ashland District School students took part in a talent show which highlighted the school’s strong art and music programs. The students made their school proud and had great fun meeting new friends and taking part in this event.
Students participating in the day’s events were Allyx Beaulier, Jarrett Beaulier, Kim Baker, Macy Belanceau, Cassandra Bolstridge, Alexandra Burby, Jeremy Caron, Tyler Chasse, Jasmine Clark, Gabrielle Cyr, Carly Fredericks, Rachel Gillis, April Godsoe, Lacey Good, Cassidy Goulet, Rebecca Libby, Caitlyn Paradis, Cassidy Pelletier, Kaili Pelletier, Benjamin Philbrook, Hannah Stratton, Fallyn Tardie and Timothy Tarr.
Ashland girls to compete in pageants

Twenty-three girls from the Ashland area will be competing in five pageants including Tiny Miss, Little Miss, Pre-Teen Miss, Junior Miss and Miss Ashland divisions. Due to the number of participants, the pageant has been divided into two separate events.
Pageant Director Jessica Nason, who is in her third year as director, said she was “very excited to see how many girls signed up for the pageant this year.” The pageant will have a variety of awards and prizes including a $500 college scholarship awarded to the winner of the Miss Ashland division. The Miss Ashland contestants will once again participate in the Miss Ashland Gives Back Presentations. All of the extra funds raised will go to individuals and organizations that deserve recognition. Three recipients will be chosen and awarded during the evening pageant.
The pageants will take place Saturday, April 12 in the Ashland District School auditorium. The Tiny, Little and Pre-Teen pageants will be held at 2 p.m., while the Junior and Miss Ashland pageants will be held at 6 p.m. Admission is $6 for each pageant with children under the age of 5 admitted free of charge. There will also be a 50/50 raffle held at each event. Best of luck to all of the talented young ladies!

The Ashland Area Senior Citizens meet the first and third Thursday at noon for a potluck luncheon at the LeBlanc Junkins VFW Post 9699 on the Portage Road with a meeting to follow. This active and growing club of senior citizens also takes trips to various restaurants throughout The County, hosts cookouts, enjoys guest speakers and entertainment such as musicians. The Portage Lake Over 50’s Club lunch is held on the last Tuesday of every month at 11:30 a.m. at the Town Hall. All individuals 50 and over are invited to attend and can bring a potluck dish to share. For more information, contact Jean Clark at 435-8034 or Donna Martin at 435-7108.
The Red Hat Loonies of Portage Lake meet every third Thursday of every month at Dean’s Motor Lodge. Membership dues are $2. Come and have a great meal and a great time, too! For more information, contact Rachel Stevens at 435-6358.
