115 Years Ago – Sept. 26, 1907
Returning from New York — Mrs. M. Frances Shaw will return this week from New York and Boston, where she has been to attend the openings of the leading hat shops. Mrs. Shaw, being unable to meet the demand of the public herself, will bring with her MIss Minnie Norton, who comes highly recommended, as a trimmer.
Leaving to take a course — B.L. Pratt started Tuesday for Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he will take a course in veterinary college. Before leaving, Mr. Pratt did what others who leave town intending to be gone several months should do — had his name placed on the subscription list of the Republican.
100 Years Ago – Sept. 28, 1922
A chance of returning — It is reported that Dudley Day of Bath, New Brunswick, may return to Fort Fairfield in the near future to again take charge of Plymouth Hotel. Mr. Day is an experienced hotel man and gave the public excellent satisfaction during the few months he was manager of the Plymouth.
Going into farming — Magnus Monson of Woodland was in town Saturday. Mr. Monson, formerly employed as clerk in Smith & Lufkin’s store, is now operating a farm in Woodland, and like all who till the soil this year, will not receive enough money from his crop, at present prices, to pay his fertilizer bill.
75 Years Ago – Sept. 25, 1947
Construction starts on new VFW home — Work began last Friday on the Lister-Knowlton Hall, future home of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 9389. The building is to be located on the VFW lot, north Main Street, opposite Caribou Municipal Airport, and present plans call for a structure 40 by 60 feet, with space allowed for expansion, either side or end.
Attending convention — Attending the New England Photographers Convention at Springfield, Massachusetts, this week are MIss Hope Ames and Mrs. Verna Maines of Caribou.
25 Years Ago – Sept. 24, 1997
Senate meeting — Maine’s YMCA Youth Governor Tim Tweedie stopped by to visit with U.S. Sen. Susan Collins during his recent trip to Washington, D.C. While in the nation’s capital, Tweedie acted as Maine’s governor in a mock political session hosted by the YMCA.
Golden anniversary — Everett and Barbara Sperry of Caribou celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at the Family Christian Center in Presque Isle. There were approximately 150 relatives and friends attending from as far away as Belfast, Bangor, Lincoln, Allagash, Pennsylvania and Virginia. The couple were married June 18, 1947 at Perham Baptist Church by Rev. Bernard Estes. They have four children and six grandchildren.
