Presque Isle High School Athlete of the Week
    The Varsity Club and Big Cheese Pizza are pleased to congratulate Brittany Bearden and Corey Park for being selected as athletes of the week for the week of Sept. 3-8.     Brittany scored the game tying goal with 55 seconds left in the game to lead the girls varsity soccer team to a 1-1 tie with John Bapst and later that week she had an important insurance goal to help secure a 2-0 win over Ellsworth.
    Corey won the Presque Isle Invitational cross-country meet on Saturday. His winning time of 18 minutes and 26 seconds was remarkable given the hot and humid weather conditions.
All County Selection Meet
    The Presque Isle Wildcats raced in the All-Aroostook Selection Meet at Fort Kent last Wednesday. Lady Wildcats placed fourth with 43 point. The girls had four in the top 10: Alecia Palmer (3rd, 22:24), Erin Thomas (7th, 22:49), Krista Buck (8th, 23:03) and Hallie Bartlett (10th, 23:35).
    The boys also placed fourth with 50 points and three runners in the top ten: Corey Park (6th, 19:07), Brandon Hafford (7th, 19:20) and Matt Howe (10th, 19:47).
Miracle Mile Event
    A Miracle Mile Event will be held to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at the University of Maine at Presque Isle Gentile Hall on Monday, Sept. 24 from 6-9 p.m.

UMPI Homecoming Weekend
    This weekend UMPI will host the annual Homecoming weekend. On Saturday, both men and wmen’s soccer teams will take on Southern Vermont College at—men at noon and women at 2 p.m. Women’s cross country begins at 11 a.m. followed b the men at 11:45 a.m. The volleyball team will match up against SVC at 11 a.m.
    On Sunday, former UMPI alumni are welcome to participate in the annual Alumni Game. The men’s game will begin at 10 a.m. and women at noon.
Hall of Fame banquet
    The University of Maine at Presque Isle Owl Athletic Hall of Fame will induct three new members on Saturday in a ceremony during Homecoming weekend. The reception for the event will begin at 5 p.m., with dinner at 5:30 p.m., followed by the induction ceremonies. All will take place at the Campus Center and all are welcome.
     The 2007 inductees include Keli (Daigle) Marston, Class of 1998: Robert Karcher, class of 1992 and John Dakin, Class of 1962.
    Reservations for the dinner and induction ceremonies are being accepted through the university’s Athletic Department at 768-9506 or by emailing an RSVP at levesque@umpi.maine.edu. The cost of the event is $10 a person. Tickets may also be purchased at the door.
Aroostook Football League
    The Aroostook Football League started on Saturday, Sept. 15. The First Citizen Bank Huskies (varsity) and Central Aroostook Savings and Loan Huskies (junior varsity) will represent the Presque Isle and Caribou Area in the Central Division.

    Sept. 28 at 7:30 p.m. against the Southern Knights in Houlton
    Oct. 6 at 12:30 p.m. against the Valley Mustangs in Caribou

    Oct. 27 at 12:30 p.m., semi-finals in Caribou
    Nov. 3 at 12:30 p.m., finals in Caribou
A fifth quarter will follow each game featuring less experienced players.
Golf Classic at PICC
to be held Saturday
    The 10th annual Presque Isle Area Chamber of Commerce Golf Classic will be held Saturday at Presque Isle Country Club.
    Registration for the three-person scramble event begins at 9 a.m., with a shotgun start at 10 a.m.
    The entry fee is $120 per team, plus $10 per mulligan. Each team must have a minimum handicap of 30. Only the first 36 teams will be accepted. A cash prize of $10,000 will be awarded to the first golfer with a hole-in-one.

Fat Tire Festival
slated this weekend
    The Nordic Heritage Sport Club in Presque Isle will host a Fat Tire Mountain Bike Festival Friday and Saturday.
    The festival will kick off on Friday with a citizen’s mountain bike biathlon. Participants will be able to learn to shoot starting at 4 p.m. (rifles are provided) and the races will begin at 5 p.m. All ages and levels of bikers are welcome to join in the fun. There will be an obstacle course set up for kids, and race participants and spectators can partake in a spaghetti supper following the race.
    Saturday will bring more family mountain biking events, with a kid’s fun race at 10 a.m. followed by eight-mile and 16-mile cross country mountain bike race options. For those more interested in speed events, there will be a downhill mountain bike race in the afternoon.  The cost is $15 for adults and $5 for kids and includes race entry, meal and race T-shirt for the first 70 registrants.

CCA to hold golf
event at Limestone CC
     Cornerstone Christian Academy is holding its first Cornerstone Classic Golf Tournament on Saturday at Limestone Country Club.
    The tournament has a three-person scramble format and is open to amateur golfers of all skill levels. The event begins with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. The entry fee is $75 per team. Individuals can also register for $25 and be placed on a team.

    In the Northern Lights ‘B’ Division: first, Paul Caron of Caribou; second, Richard Godin of Caribou and third, Mark Graves.
    In the Powder Puff Division: first, Natasha Pinette of Woodland; second, Chelsea Nicholson of Knoxford, N.B. and Leah McEwen of Fort Fairfield.

Presque Isle J.V. Soccer
    The J.V. Lady Wildcats have a 9-0 record now with victories this past week against Ellsworth, Fort Kent, Houlton and Central of East Corinth.
    The Cats trailed by one goal at halftime against Ellsworth. After the break, Jenna Stephenson netted her fifth goal of the season, followed by another goal by Abbie Lapointe. Keeper Rilee Currie made four saves.
    On Tuesday the girls blanked St. John Valley with a score of three by Jenna Stephenson, Alicia Kierstead and Casey Carson.
    The Cats traveled to East Corinth on Saturday. They dominated over the Red Devils with a final score of 14-0. Goalie Currie made her seventh shutout of the season. Abbie Lapointe made three goals. Mackenzie Pinette, Lindsay Michaud and Casey Carson all had two goals each. Deidre Dicker, Jenna Stephenson, Haley Johnston, Chelsea Lynds and Shae Adler each had one goal.
