Panthers shoot low round, qualify for state C tourney

    Central Aroostook and Katahdin both qualified for the upcoming Class C State Golf Team Championships, to be played at Natanis Golf Club in Vassalboro Oct. 6, following their top-two placement at the Aroostook League Championships/Regional Qualifying Tournament held on a beautiful afternoon Monday at Mars Hill Country Club.     The Panthers had a score of 373, with the Cougars six strokes back at 379, to pace the five-team field. Limestone/MSSM (426), Hodgdon (491) and Fort Fairfield (536) were the other schools competing.
    Also, the top five individuals qualified for the Class C State Individual Championships, set for Natanis Oct. 13. Evan McCarthy of Katahdin shot the low round with an 82. Teammate Josh Guiggey was six strokes back with an 88.
    Lee Gagnon of Central Aroostook (89), Matt Enman of Limestone/MSSM (89) and Kane Kingsbury (90) were other qualifiers.

    The remainder of the top-10 included Greg Cousins of CA (94), Matt Beaulieu of Limestone/MSSM (96), Tom Albert of Limestone/MSSM (98), Will Delong of CA (100) and T.J. Turley of CA (100).
    Fort Fairfield’s top golfer was Ian Towle, who carded a 104.
    In regular season action, Caribou and Presque Isle hooked up for a meeting last Tuesday at Presque Isle Country Club, with the Wildcats winning, 163-189.         Mitchell Sperrey scorched the course with a low round of 38 to pace the ’Cats. Matt Talbot had a 39 and Nic Gallant a 40 to complement Sperrey’s performance.
    Caribou’s Erik Anderson shot a 42, while Pat Thibodeau (47) was the only other Viking to break 50.
    The Vikes beat Old Town by 12 strokes in a home match played last Wednesday. Anderson shot a 42, while Ellis Pelletier and Rob Schuster posted scores of 45 to lead Caribou, now 5-2. The Vikes took on John Bapst in Newport yesterday and next host Penquis Monday.
    The Wildcat boys also beat Dexter Friday, 164-198, in a home match to remain undefeated at 6-0. Talbot came in with a 37, followed by Nick Shaw with a 41 and Tyler St. Pierre a 43 to pace Presque Isle. The Wildcats competed at Bucksport yesterday afternoon and will host Mattanawcook Thursday for a 4 p.m. match.
