Cheerleaders visit Rotary Club

The Mars Hill Rotary Club met on April 1 at 6:30 a.m. at the Aroostook Health Center.
Special guests were members of this year’s Class D state cheerleading champions. The CAHS squad has brought home this title many times: 2002, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2014. This year the squad also received the Sportsmanship Award — voted on by all the participating coaches.
Coach Sami Allen says dedication and closeness to one another are the major reasons for the success of this sport. They practice six days a week for two to two-and-a-half hours each day.
Sami described the voting process that takes place during competitions. There are five judges looking at stunts, dance, cheer, jumps and tumbling. Routines are to be under three minutes, with most being around two-and-a-half minutes long. She and her assistant coach, Janice Mosher, do their own choreography and are already thinking of things for next year’s team. They will lose four teams members this year to graduation but expect around eight more coming in as freshmen. There can be 22 members on a squad, with 20 competing.
The squad was asked to perform at this year’s biathlon in Presque Isle and had a great time.
Congratulations, team, on a job well done! You have made your hometowns proud!

BINGO

The William Cousins Post 118 of the American Legion in Mars Hill hosts a Bingo Night every Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Legion building on Silver Street. There will be cash prizes and concessions.

Girl Scouts volunteer

Local Girl Scouts are looking for ways to answer the needs of the community, both large and small. If you are a non-profit organization and need volunteers to help with your projects, call 425-9020. The troop is full of junior high girls looking to volunteer 50 hours worth of community service to earn their Silver Award. The troop can help with any number of activities in Blaine, Bridgewater and Mars Hill.
