Presque Isle boys overtake Red Devils and Coyotes on the road
The Ashland girls picked up a pair of point-worthy victories in soccer action last week. The Lady Hornets downed Van Buren last Tuesday, 6-1, and then handled Washburn Friday in Caribou, 4-1.

Whitney Flint had a hat trick and Jacky Raymond scored a goal and assisted on three others as Ashland was too much for the home team Lady Crusaders.
Suzie Poulin and Macie Pelkey were the other Ashland goal scorers, while netminder Taylor Baker saved 11 of 12 shots.
At Caribou, Raymond scored two goals and Jessica Jimmo and Pelkey had one each as the Lady Hornets moved to 6-0-1 and avenged the only blemish on their record after tying Washburn two weeks earlier in Ashland.
Erica McDougall was the only Washburn player to find the net, as she scored a goal in the second half off a Morgan Berube assist.
Lady Beaver coach Ron Ericson was encouraged with his team’s effort despite picking up the loss.
“I thought we did well,” he said. “Ashland is a great team and no one else that we play is quite as good as they are, so it is an adjustment for us.
“We learned what we do well and what we need to work on.”
Washburn was a 4-0 winner over Wisdom last Wednesday, as freshman Lindsey Blackstone scored her first career goal. Washburn’s record is now 8-3-1.
The Presque Isle girls were easy winners twice, 5-1 at Fort Kent last Tuesday and 8-0 Saturday at East Corinth over the Central Red Devils.
Katrina Whittier scored two goals in Saturday’s victory, while Amy Grivois, Kayla Legassie, Sarah Porter, Amber Griffin, Kali Ireland and Carmen Allen added one apiece.
Allisen Donovan and Kelsey Park combined for the shutout in goal with 10 saves on 15 shot attempts.
In the victory over the Lady Warriors earlier in the week, Allen led the way with two goals, while Whittier, Porter and Brittany Bearden had one apiece.
PI improved its record to 4-0-2, with its next match scheduled Saturday at home against Bucksport.
The Easton Lady Bears put nine goals on the scoreboard against East Grand last Tuesday for their second win of the year. Katrina Martin led the way with three goals and two assists. Kilynne Beaulieu and Sam Fuller both notched a pair of goals, while Brooke Hammond and Sydney Trask put in one each.
The Central Aroostook girls split their matches last week, losing at Hodgdon last Tuesday, 2-1, and then turning around to defeat Easton Thursday, 6-1. Alexandria Dame’s two goals keyed the victory over the Bears and improved CA’s record to 7-6. Beaulieu scored for Easton, who ended its season at 2-12.
In boys’ action, Presque Isle continued its fine play with victories Saturday at Central and Monday at Old Town.
In a 2-1 win over the Red Devils, Warren Zubrick scored off a Parker Hovey assist just 21 seconds into the second half after Ethan Hill netted a first-half tally, helping the Wildcats come out on top. Russ Mortland assisted on the Hill goal.
The Wildcats took another road trip Monday, but it had little effect on the outcome as PI came up with a 4-1 win. Mortland scored twice, while Hovey and Gerard Desjardins had the other goals.
Presque Isle is now 4-1-1, with Saturday’s home match against Bucksport marking the midway point of the season for the team.
Wildcat coach Scott Young said the defense has taken strides, especially with its play in the air, but “our strength is still on the ground and we need to continue to keep the ball down in order to find success,” he added.
Finishing scoring opportunities has been a problem early in the season, according to Young, but is getting better every game.
Young is hoping the team will show continued improvement the rest of the way.
“We look forward to our second time around with all our opponents to see just how far we have come and potentially how much further we will need to go in order to play for a championship,” said the veteran coach.
The Ashland Hornets experienced defeat for the first time this season in a 7-4 loss at Van Buren last Tuesday. Ashland had no answer for the Crusaders’ Ben Doucette, who scored four times and also chipped in with an assist.
“We were very disappointed and disgusted with our play,” said Hornet coach Kevin Paradis. “We made critical errors and Van Buren capitalized on every mistake.”
The game was a rematch of last year’s EM Class D championship, won by the Crusaders, 1-0.
The two teams play again Oct. 5 in Ashland, and Paradis is already looking forward to the matchup. “We feel we have much to prove,” he said. “We feel we are a better team than we showed.”
Carl Nemer scored three goals and Jeremy Tarr had the other on a penalty kick. Jake Paradis picked up an assist.
The Hornets bounced back in a big way Friday against Washburn in Caribou, winning 10-1. Tyler Cote had three goals and three assists to lead the charge. Nemer added two goals for the winners, now 6-1 on the season. Nick McIntoshh scored the lone Washburn goal.
Last Tuesday, Fort Fairfield easily handled the Limestone/MSSM Eagles by a 9-1 final. Cody Closson and Ryan Noyes both picked up hat tricks for the Tigers.
Fort Fairfield also scored wins over Hodgdon and Katahdin in recent play and hold a 10-0 mark heading into the harvest recess. Noyes, Closson and Josh Booth all had goals in the most recent victory, a 3-2 home win over Hodgdon Monday. Noyes also picked up assists on the other two scoring plays.
Central Aroostook won twice last week, 5-0 over Hodgdon and 3-1 over Easton. In Thursday’s victory over the Bears, Logan McCarthy, Emmanuel Martinez and Logan Thomas came through with the goals as CA lifted its record to 6-4-2. Brad Trask scored an unassisted goal for the Bears, who finished up the regular season at 10-4.
Easton had blanked East Grand two days earlier, 3-0, as Trask scored twice and assisted on Corey White’s tally.
