PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Northern Maine Community College announced that it will be inviting prospective students from around the state to apply to participate in the college’s first-ever free “North of Now Field Day,” which will take place on Nov. 9.
The overnight field day will provide three lucky students with a truly unique experience — an actual day in the life of what it would be like to attend NMCC, along with the opportunity to learn first-hand about the college’s programs. NMCC will cover each student’s transportation, food, and lodging expenses.
“With recent high school graduates eligible for free tuition in Maine, now is the perfect opportunity to provide prospective students insight into what college in Northern Maine could look like for them,” said Griffin Goins, dean of Development & Public Affairs. “Ever thought of going to college in Northern Maine? Well, seeing is believing, which is why we’re inviting people to experience our programs first-hand. At Northern Maine Community College, we nurture the next generation of students and provide them with the tools for success.”
Specializing in water treatment technology, wind power technology, and emergency medical services, NMCC offers the latest equipment and simulation technology to help its students enter the workforce with technically-current skills. What makes these programs unique to NMCC includes:
- The water treatment technology program is the only program in the state that combines textbook learning and hands-on learning in lab facilities, allowing students to utilize the equipment they will use in the real world upon graduation.
- The wind power technology program is the only one in New England that prepares technicians who want to enter the industry. Graduates have secured jobs immediately after graduation with wind farm operators throughout the country, including California and Hawaii.
- The emergency medical services program prepares students for EMT, Advanced EMT, and paramedic jobs. NMCC has a 100 percent placement rate for graduates to obtain employment after graduation.
The lucky participants for the free “North of Now Field Day” will get to experience a range of activities, including meeting with students and faculty; shadowing students through classes; dining on campus; experiencing residential life and staying in the dorms (under 18 will need a volunteer chaperone present, all expenses covered).
This year Gov. Janet Mills passed a supplemental budget that made all of Maine’s community colleges free for recent high school graduates. The free college scholarship gives those graduates from the classes of 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023 a leg up to build a sustainable and in-demand career as they prepare to enter the workforce in the wake of a global pandemic.
“We know there are many options for students to choose from,” Goins continued. “NMCC offers the lowest college tuition in New England, with free tuition for recent high school graduates, and for adult students, we have plenty of options for grant aid that don’t have to be paid back. We also help students access other services to reduce non-tuition costs such as food, transportation, and childcare.”
Students will find world-class snowmobiling and cross-country skiing trails, fishing, hunting, hiking, and boating outside the classroom.
