Deserts

by Annicka Benson

Grade 6 PIMS

I am really sweaty
with lots of deserts

I worry about people
and if they will see dead animals

I dream of lots and lots
of fresh water

I wonder if the Mayans
will ever come back

I feel lots of pokey cactus

I am really sweaty
with lots of deserts

Stone Head

by Caleb Wheaton

 Grade 6 PIMS

I am a giant stone head
I see big statues
and carvings
I dream I will walk
and talk
I worry I will crumble
to pieces
I smell beans, peppers,
and squash in the garden
I am a giant stone head

Mexico

I am pretty and bright

I feel hot sand
I see people walking on me

I want to be clean

I hear kids playing

I am pretty and bright

Mexico

by Gavin Akeley

 Grade 6 PIMS

I am a beautiful country
I see volcanoes
I worry about all
of my sinkholes
I hear the sound of all
the cars and people
I hope people will
take care of me
I am a beautiful country

 ‘Stranded!’

by Austin Broad

 Grade 6 PIMS

It was a cold Saturday morning when Alex decided to go hunting alone in the Northern Maine Woods.
He stopped and walked in the woods and off the trail. Alex went in the woods so far he couldn’t find his way out.  It became late and after dark, Alex wouldn’t be able to see anything. He went off the trail as he tracked animal prints which led him further into the woods.

It was now dark and Alex couldn’t see anything. He decided he needed to set up camp, and he used what he had caught and killed that day as his food. Until a search party came looking for him, Alex had to defend himself. He defended himself by making a shelter to keep warm. He used his weapon to gather food, hoping a search party was looking for him.

After four days, Alex was stranded, so he decided to head out again. He walked along the river. He made a triangle out of big rocks on the shoreline and he built a fire and burned things he could find that would make black smoke. The black smoke was a signal for help.

If a search party was out looking for him, they would see the smoke. This would help lead them to where he was. If not a search party, then maybe other hunters would find him.

Alex realized by going off the trail, he made a bad decision and put himself in a dangerous situation. Alex started thinking he should not have entered the woods alone. He learned a great lesson in this adventure, and if he makes it out alive, he will share his story of how the Northern Maine Woods made an impact on him.

 ‘The Locket’

by Taylor Burby

 Grade 6 PIMS

Once, there was a girl. Her name was Nikki. She was tall and skinny. She had brown and reddish-orange hair. She lived with her stepdad, mother, and two sisters.

One day, she went for a walk in the woods. As she walked, she heard the crunching of leaves under her feet. Then, as she was walking, suddenly she tripped on something. It was a locket.

She picked the locket up. It was gold and shaped as a heart with a silver star on the front. She brought it home and washed the dirt off it. She put a picture of her family in it. She always wears it now
