The Institute for Family-Owned Business, a Portland-based nonprofit, in partnership with the MEMIC Group, a Portland-based workers compensation insurance provider presented S.W. Collins Company with the Shep Lee Community Service Award, named for one of the founders of IFOB at their annual 2022 Maine Family Business Awards ceremony.
Since 1844, S.W. Collins Company’s mission has been to “…offer excellent products and legendary service as we strive to be an active, positive influence in the communities in which we live and work.” Along with fifth generation owners Sam Collins and Gregg Collins and sixth generation leaders Clara Collins and Adam Collins, the company is fortunate to have many talented people motivated by company values; Respect, Deliver, Together, Learn and Care. As coaches, church leaders, directors and board members, referees, clowns, and school volunteers, they contribute to our communities outside the walls of their stores.
In accepting the award, company President Sam Collins exclaimed, “We were thrilled to receive the Shep Lee award recognizing all the many volunteer hours that all our fellow Pioneers contribute and the donations that are made to make our communities better places to live and work. We are fortunate to be included with a great cast of some of the finest Maine family companies.”
This year’s honorees were selected from a record 191 nominations and 32 semi-finalists that competed for seven awards. IFOB’s annual awards spotlight Maine firms that demonstrate excellence in family involvement, business success and a commitment to employees, customers and community.
Investing in people, technology, material handling equipment and drive thru lumberyard storage buildings sets the company apart from the competition. Education and training of “Pioneers” via SWC University is of utmost importance to provide the customer with solutions and quality products for their home repair and building needs. The biannual community grant program has contributed to countless organizations throughout northern Maine in addition to supporting local schools and events that foster relationships within the communities.
“Over the last year, I have had the opportunity to connect virtually with many other leaders of their family businesses through the IFOB,” said Operations Manager Clara Collins. “I was honored that our company was nominated by Lindsay Skilling of Gifford’s Ice Cream after getting to connect with her on multiple occasions to ask questions or for advice, and learn about her experiences and all the incredible opportunities the IFOB offers its members. It means so much to me, my dad, my Uncle Gregg, my cousin Adam, and all our Pioneers, to be recognized alongside so many strong family businesses in Maine.”
