GILMAN RECEIVED SERVICE PLAQUE — John A. Gilman, right, was honored by the Northern National Bank upon completion of 25 years of service to the Bank. He was presented a 25-year plaque on behalf of the Board of Directors by Irwin F. Porter, executive vice president. Gillman, a vice president, was manager of the data processing Department. He began his career with the Northern National in 1947 as a teller in the Mars Hill office. Throughout the previous 25 years, he had worked as a note teller in the Caribou office, bookkeeping supervisor and operations officer at the main office in Presque Isle. He was a graduate of Aroostook Central Institute in Mars HIll, attended Norwich University and the University of Chicago. He was a graduate of Williams School of Banking. Gilman was married to the former Marion York of Mars HIll and they had three children, Susan, Gray and Garth. They resided on York Street in Mars Hill. (File photo 1972/The Star-Herald)

75 Years Ago – Dec. 4, 1947

New pumper arrived — The long-awaited pumper for the Presque Isle Fire Department, which arrived accompanied by Fire Chief Herbert H. Treffry and Carl Porter, representative of the Mack company, combined fire-fighting efficiency with one feature which made answering calls in cold weather much more comfortable and less hazardous for the firemen, who in the past, have always had to stand at the rear of the truck, with little or no protection from icy winds.

The cab of the new truck held six men in addition to the driver. The new unit, a 750-gallon Mack pumper with a 250-gallon booster tank, carried 1,500 feet of 2 1/2-inch hose and 1,000 feet of 1 1/2-inch hose. Complete modern equipment included aluminum extension ladders.

Local hospital announced new personnel policy — An eight-hour day for staff nurses at the Presque Isle General Hospital, nurses’ salaries ranging from $120 to $130 per month plus full maintenance and a bonus for evening and night duty, and a new policy on vacations and sick leave, were features of a new schedule announced by Gardiner E. Vincent, administrator of the hospital.

50 Years Ago – Dec. 6, 1972

Another gold brick — Presque Isle Hi-Y and Tri-Hi-Y members finished off their gold brick pledge of $1,000 during the opening minutes of the Presque Isle Rotary Radio-TV auction Wednesday evening, Nov. 29. As the only youth group in the Presque Isle area ever to make such a pledge, they also paid off the $1,000 in five years rather than the usual 10-year installment period.

Three were honored at the company’s meeting — Three employees of the Maine Mutual Group of Insurance Companies were honored at the directors’ meeting and were awarded a United States Bond and a plaque commemorating their 25 years of service to the companies. Mearl H. McGlauflin joined the companies in November 1947, and became assistant treasurer and manager of the IBM and Claim Departments. McGlauflin was an active member of the Presque Isle Lions Club for many years, and was Quartermaster of Hayward-Frazier Post 2599 Veterans of Foreign Wars. Edwin G. Packard became associated with the companies in November 1947 and became assistant secretary and chief underwriter. Packard was a member of the SAD No. 1 School Board and an active member of the Presque Isle Rotary Club, the American Legion and many other civic organizations. S. Philip McGlauflin joined the companies in 1946 and was inspector and manager of the printing department of the companies. He was an active member of the Presque Isle Rod and Gun Club and the CB Radio Club.

25 Years Ago – Dec. 3, 1997

Donovan starred at UMaine — Danielle Donovan, who dominated the cross country running scene during her four years at Presque Isle High School, was the top performer for the University of Maine Black Bears women’s team. The UMaine freshman led the team in all six meets the Black Bears participated in. All were held on courses measuring 5,000 meters. She was sixth at 18:53 in a tri-meet against Boston College and New Hampshire and second (19:26) in a home meet against Northeastern. At the Griak Invitational held at the University of Minnesota, a meet which included the top cross country programs in the country, Donovan was 117th out of 165 runners.

Class won $1,000 for camera — Some hard work and a little luck paid off for Richard Lord’s human biology class at Presque Isle High School. The class, made up of juniors and seniors, participated in several “Biology Mysteries” over the internet, sponsored by Genentech, a biological technology company in San Francisco, California. The contest, which included three episodes the students had to solve on the company’s website, took all of the correct answers and included them in a drawing for $1,000 in prize money. Lord was notified that his class was the grand prize winner.
