CARY TOWNSHIP, Maine — Firefighters from the Houlton Fire Department were quick to knock down a garage fire on the Skedgell Road early Friday morning.
The crew responded to a report of a structure fire at 185 Skedgell Road in Cary Township and upon arrival discovered a detached garage was fully involved in flames, according to DJ Norton, a member of the Houlton Fire Department.
Homeowners Rebecca and Gerry Caron, along with an adult son, Collin, were home at the time of the fire, and managed to exit their house without incident. The Caron’s house was not damaged in the fire.
Roughly 10 cords of wood, a stove and a GMC work pickup were destroyed in the blaze. Several chickens and a cat also perished in the garage.
Norton said responding to the fire was tricky in that the Skedgell Road had several inches of snow and slush on the ground, coupled with high winds and sleet that was prevalent in the area at the time of the fire.
No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire was not determined.
