Local agricultural producer Todd Winslow spoke to PROBUS members at the December meeting on the subject of Maine agriculture.
He had many photos to illustrate his remarks. He specified the decline in numbers of farms, but growth in acreage and productivity of the large farms now operating. He also talked about changes in rotation practices and crops produced.
The costs are eye-opening costs for machinery, fertilizer, chemicals and storages associated with their operations. He also spoke of the recent increase in the number of small farms and the variety of animals and crops his farming operation raises.
The next meeting of PROBUS will be on Jan. 19 at Reed Commons at Northern Maine Community College. Guests are welcome.
