PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Mixtures of snow and rain blanketed Aroostook County on Thursday.
Overnight and early morning snow shifted into a heavy rain as residents began their morning dig-out while snow plows cleared the roadways, parking lots and sidewalks.
Snow accumulations across Aroostook County were forecast from 2 to 12 inches with sleet around a tenth of an inch and ice from a tenth to a quarter of an inch, according to the National Weather Service office in Caribou.
Driving conditions were somewhat harsh, but traffic was relatively light, Presque Isle Police Sgt. Stephen St. Peter said, possibly due to the early storm warnings people received from weather reports.
“It seems like everybody getting forewarned ahead of time seemed to help keep them off the roads,” St. Peter said.
The highest snowfall occurred in the St. John Valley, with 15 inches in St. Agatha, 15 in Allagash and 13 in Fort Kent, according to National Weather Service snowfall reports.
New Sweden, Stockholm and Madawaska received 12 inches. Perham had 11, Easton 9 1/2 and Caribou and Limestone 9. A little over 8 inches fell in Presque Isle, and Houlton received around 6.
