The Presque Isle and Fort Fairfield track and field teams experienced their first taste of competition this spring during a meet held at Brewer Saturday. The County squads joined several other schools from throughout eastern Maine for the event.
The PI girls scored 48 points, placing them fifth out of 10 schools. Fort Fairfield managed three points on the day.
Leading the way for the Wildcats was Regan Nelson, who won the shot put with a mark of 34 feet, 4 inches and the discus with a mark of 95 feet, 4 inches. Emily Colligan and Mandy Graham, placed third and fourth, respectively, in the 3,200-meter run. Colligan finished in 14:29.67 and Graham in 14:41.69.
Abbie Estey of PI was fourth in the discus and fifth in the shot put.
PI’s 4×800-meter relay team was third in 11:46.21, the 4×100 relay team was fifth in 58.61 seconds and the 4×400 relay team sixth in 5:23.69.
Sarah Owens of Fort Fairfield was fifth in the 100 hurdles in 19.78 seconds.
For the boys, PI had 23 points to take sixth place and Fort Fairfield 12 for ninth out of 10 schools.
Mitchell Ayotte had the Wildcats’ top effort, placing second in the long jump at 19 feet, 3.75 inches. He was also sixth in the triple jump, while Matt Tilley took fourth in the javelin at 122 feet, 9 inches and James Churchill was also fourth in the 1,600 race walk in 11:31.37.
Two of the Wildcats’ relay teams placed. The 4×800 team was fourth in 10:19.59 and the 4×100 team was fifth in 50.71 seconds.
Caleb Daigle placed in a pair of events for Fort Fairfield, placing fourth in the discus at 112 feet, 5 inches and sixth in the 100-meter dash in 12.6 seconds. Teammate Steven Wentworth was third in the race walk in 9:40.58.
Presque Isle will host all Aroostook County schools in a meet set for Friday beginning at 3:30 p.m. at the Johnson Athletic Complex track at Presque Isle Middle School.
