AUGUSTA, Maine — After a brief pandemic absence, Aroostook Partnership is once again hosting Aroostook Day at the Legislature Wednesday Feb. 15 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the Senator Inn in Augusta.
Aroostook Day is an opportunity for members of the private, public and nonprofit sectors in Aroostook County to interact directly with elected state representatives on issues of importance to The County.
Aroostook Day is a largely informal gathering with a social hour and dinner, but there is a more formal portion which will focus on workforce, energy and natural resources.
“This event provides a great venue for our unified Aroostook voice to be heard in Augusta on matters that directly impact our rural natural resource-based economy,” said Paul Towle, president of Aroostook Partnership. “In a sense, we speak for all rural Maine where our challenges and opportunities are similar but less often heard. We look forward to conveying our priorities while also forming new relationships with our elected officials.”
Originated by LEADers Encouraging Aroostook Development nearly 30 years ago, Aroostook Day has traditionally been well attended by Aroostook County residents and legislators from across the state.
Jason Parent, who chairs the AP Advocacy Committee and is an organizer of the event, said it is vital for Aroostook County voices to be heard in Augusta.
“The needs of Aroostook County businesses and organizations are often unique from other parts of Maine,” said Parent. “Aroostook Day provides us with the opportunity to ensure we have a voice at the table, and that not only our elected State Senators and Representatives from The County hear what is needed for our region to advance, but that other legislative leaders and administration officials are tuned in and ready to partner with us to grow the region.”
More than 30 legislators and nearly 50 County residents attended the function in 2019 and Towle is hoping for an even larger turnout this year.
