Last week’s deep freeze put a halt to some sporting events but that didn’t stop northern Maine teams from having a competitive week in basketball. The following scores were reported to the newspaper by presstime.
Boys:
Presque Isle 57, Mount Desert Island 47 — Presque Isle couldn’t have asked for a better home game against Mount Desert Island as they won by 10 points on Saturday, Jan. 28.
Malachi Cummings led Presque Isle at 21 points scored while also managing to get 14 rebounds. Jack Hallett chipped in for Presque Isle with 10 points.
Ashland 40, Washburn 24 — Ashland picked up their fourth win of the season with a 13-to-3 third quarter surge to extend their lead from halftime on Monday, Jan. 30.
Grant Thomas led Ashland in scoring by adding 12 points while his teammates Austin Clark racked up nine points—along with triple 3-pointers—and Inyas Janoch contributed eight points.
Washburn was led by Garrett Plourde with nine points to try to keep Washburn in the game.
Easton 76, Washburn 31 — Easton had a runaway victory over Washburn with a 23-to-9 first quarter advantage on Thursday, Feb. 2.
Owen Sweeney had a game total of 21 points for Easton with Zach Pelletier netting 10 points.
Washburn had both Parker Corey and Mitchell Turner pitch in nine points for the game.
Girls:
Ashland 39, Washburn 25 — Ashland started the game in the first quarter with a 10 point lead that only grew until their victory over Washburn on Monday, Jan. 30.
Abby Doughty had 14 points scored for Ashland and also led in 3-pointers with two netted for the night.
Gabbie Anderson was Washburn’s top scorer with six points netted, along with Logan Curtis making one 3-pointer and an inside jump shot to round out to five points.
Washburn 22, Easton 17 — Washburn got a break on Thursday, Feb. 2, with a victory over Easton at their home court.
Madelyn Johnston was the top scorer of the night at nine points scored and the only 3-pointer for her team.
Easton’s Madison Bridges was the leading scorer at eight points with no 3-point shots made the entire game.
