115 Years Ago – Feb. 27, 1908
Returned from extended trip — Mr. and Mrs. C. Powers returned last week from an extended trip to Wisconsin, Minnesota and other western states. Mr. Powers reports but very little snow in that section, and states that wheels were in use in nearly every place he was in.
Business sold — S. L. White has sold his drug store to R. L. Pitcher and Harry Trainor, who will conduct the business under the name of The Caribou Drug Co. Mr. Trainor is president and Mr. Pitcher is secretary and treasurer. The new proprietors are well and favorably known in Caribou and will undoubtedly meet with success.
100 Years Ago – March 1, 1923
Leaving for California — Kendall McLellan, who has been employed for some time in the drugstore of A. B. Havey, started last Friday for Los Angeles, California. He will stop for a time with his uncle, L. J Sherwood, formerly of Caribou, until his plans for the future are fully developed. Kendall has many friends in Caribou who wish for him every success so deserving a young man merits.
Partnership formed — Otto Currier, who has been associated with the Caribou Grange store for the past 15 years, has entered into partnership with his brother, H. A Currier, to the clothing and furnishing business. THey have made some changes and improvements in the store, and have added a line of groceries and shelf goods, as will be noticed by their advertisement in the paper.
75 Years Ago – Feb. 26, 1948
Building plans being drawn for Legion Memorial Home — Plans for a Veterans’ Memorial building have been drawn up and approved by the building committee of the Henry B. Pratt, Jr., Post of the American Legion. These plans, now in the hands of John S. Larson, well known Brewer architect, are awaiting completion of construction details, and when finished, will be submitted to various contractors for bids.
Job training for students — Continuing the ‘on-the-job-training’ program initiated last year at Caribou high school, commercial students will be available for a two-week period to work at offices in Caribou. Students may work from 1-5 P.M. on Mondays through Friday for the two-week session.
25 Years Ago – March 4, 1998
Nadeau named BPW 1998 Young Careerist — Laura Nadeau of Caribou has been selected to represent Caribou’s Business and Professional Women’s organization as the Young Careerist for 1998. She has been an active member of the club and is currently employed as an admissions representative for the University of Maine of Presque Isle.
Construction is progressing at the call center — Demolition is near completion and new walls have been built in the Sitel building at the Loring Commerce Center. The call center is slated for start-up the first or second week in May. Cyr Construction has been contracted to do the renovation for about $525,000. Construction began Feb. 16 and is on schedule, said Dale Michaud of Cyr Construction.
