Singer Sewing Machine Co. To Open New Store – The Singer Sewing Machine Company will return to Houlton after an absence of several years when they open their new modern store in the Putnam-Ervin block about March 15. It will be the company’s headquarters in Northern Maine.
One Point Margin Loses For HHS Jrs.– The Houlton Junior Division lost its second straight game in a row by the margin of one point last Friday night. This time the younger five fell to defeat at the hands of a good Caribou Frosh team on the latter’s home floor. After leading, 21 to 16, at the half the Junior Division ran into a little trouble in the third frame but managed to hold a slim lead of one point, 25 to 24. The JD’s forged out front in the opening minutes of the finals and for a time looked like they had the game clinched, but the Caribou Frosh began to close in on them.

Dr. Lycette Takes Post In Michigan – Dr. Richard M. Lycette, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jasper Lycette of Houlton, has recently assumed a newly-established R & D directorship with the Parke-Davis Co. of Rochester, Michigan in the area of blood products. Dr. Lycette was formerly a senior research scientist at the American Red Cross blood research center in Bethesda, Md., and earlier a science consultant for the Governor of Maine. He is a graduate of the University of Maine at Orono and taught one year at U of M at Augusta.
Oakfield HIgh Aids Nicaragua Through CARE – Oakfield Community High School has joined with more than 330 other schools across New England to provide vital aid through CARE to survivors of the devastating earthquake which struck Managua, Nicaragua on Christmas weekend. Richard J. Calandrella, CARE’s Assistant New England Director, reported from his Boston office that the Student Council had sponsored a fund drive which raised $12.75.

Aroostook All-star teams named – The eighth annual Aroostook County Senior All-Star Classic basketball games will be held Tuesday at Wieden Gymnasium on the campus of the University of Maine at Presque Isle. The talents of 40 of the top senior players in the County will be showcased with the girls game tipping off at 6 p.m. followed by the boys contest at 8 p.m. The South girls team includes Traci Aldrich of Hodgdon, Jaime Alexander of Mars Hill, Megan Amero of East Grand, Jennifer Bell of Houlton, Mia Chabot of HOdgdon, Kim Collier of Dyer Brook, Jen Cowperthwaite of Houlton, Bobbi Jo Dyer of Mars Hill, Jill Kelley of Sherman and Allison Piper of Presque Isle.
Dr. Wilson Posthumously Honored – More than 50 family members, friends and colleagues of Dr. Ivan Wilson gathered Sunday at Houlton Regional Hospital to witness the unveiling of a new wing, dedicated in the late physician’s honor. Wilson practiced medicine in the Houlton area from 1957 until his death in 1993. A leader and well-respected member of the community, he was most poignantly remembered by those he touched most deeply.
