CARIBOU, Maine — The North Star district of the Katahdin Area Council Boy Scouts of America, which comprises Scouts from across Aroostook County, recently presented Bill Flagg of Cary Medical Center with its Good Scout Award for 2022.
The Good Scout Award recognizes extraordinary leadership of citizens in communities across Aroostook County. Honoring distinguished citizenship delivers a message to youth that character counts. The lives of distinguished citizens set examples that serve to inspire youth to lead, to accept responsibility, and to care about principles and causes beyond self-interest, Scout officials said.
Recipients need not have been Scouts but must carry the “Spirit of Scouting.” They are individuals who have been unselfish in their service to others on an individual and community basis. They seek no return for their service, other than the satisfaction of aiding their fellow citizens, their community, and their nation.
Bill Flagg has the longest tenure on the Cary Medical Center senior management team, having been in his current position for more than 40 years, Katahdin Council officials said, citing Flagg’s energy and passion for promoting health care.
His participation in various events, committees and special projects has paved the way for hospital staff to develop valuable relationships with local and state agencies, groups, and businesses. Additionally, he often facilitates opportunities for patients and the public to access critical health information and to participate in wellness activities and programs, according to Cary officials.
From securing grants to volunteering his time and talents, Flagg finds creative ways to meet community health care needs. He has been involved in significant projects including the building of the Maine VeteransHome on the Cary Medical Center campus and the formation of the Community Alcohol and Drug Education Team.
His efforts have garnered state, national and even international attention not only for Cary Medical Center, but also for northern Maine and other rural healthcare organizations, hospital officials said.
Past recipients of the North Star Good Scout Award include Ray Gauvin, Shawn Cunningham of WAGM, Jon Prescott of Katahdin Trust, Carl Soderberg of Soderberg Construction, Sam Collins of S.W. Collins Co., Peter Sirois of Northern Maine Medical Center, Kris Doody of Cary, Jason Parent of Aroostook County Action Program and Norm Fornier, former Aroostook County commissioner.
