Families enjoy winter fun in Limestone

LIMESTONE, Maine — Spring will soon be here, but that did not stop Limestone from celebrating winter one last time on Saturday.

The Limestone Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club and Recreation Department partnered to host the town’s annual Winter Family Fun Day. More than a dozen children and their parents stopped by Albert Michaud Memorial Park for an afternoon of snow tubing, ice skating, a limbo contest and tug-of-war competition.

The snow tube hill, created by the Limestone Snowmobile Club, became one of the day’s most popular attractions.

Brothers Danny, 10, and Jayden Gahagan, 7, and many of their friends laughed excitedly while sliding down the hill, their snow tubes tied together to make a “train.” Thanks to an early snow melt, the bottom of the hill was a little muddy, but that only made the group’s landing more fun.

“The train was my favorite part,” Danny Gahagan said. His brother quickly agreed.

Their mother, Amanda Gahagan, also a member of the town’s recreation committee, was glad to see the community winter traditions continue.

“I’ve always brought them [to Winter Family Fun Day],” Amanda Gahagan said. “I enjoy seeing them outside and having fun.”

In Limestone, volunteers have hosted Winter Family Fun Day for the past 20 years. The event has evolved over the years to include a variety of activities such as skiing and dog sledding. This year, organizers introduced new activities, like the limbo and tug-of-war contests and snow sculptures.

Regardless of what the kids are doing, the most important thing is that they’re having fun, said Rotary Club President Debbie Rhome.

“We really just want to get them outside in the winter,” Rhome said. “It’s a day when families can make memories together.”
