PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Using a helicopter and numerous volunteers, 3,000 plastic eggs will be dropped onto the lawn and parking lot at 79 Fleetwood Street on Saturday, April 1. The event, sponsored by Grant Memorial United Methodist Church, is for all kids 12 and under from the local community and will feature kids’ play zones and prizes, as well as a reading of the Easter story. The event begins at 10 a.m. and the egg drop will happen at 11 a.m. Activities will end at noon.
Grant Memorial’s pastor, the Rev. Dr. Tracy Reeves, said, “As the newly appointed pastor of Grant Memorial UMC, I think this will be a great opportunity for me to get to know the community and for the church to join our neighbors for an ‘eggciting’ and fun way to proclaim the resurrection of Jesus Christ!”
Prior to the egg drop, there will be two play zones, one for preschoolers and one for older children, featuring art activities and face painting. To help with this effort, volunteers from local Freedom Church and County Cares will be special partners joining Grant church members and offering music, games and emcee services at the site. Immediately after the helicopter drops the eggs onto the field, children 3 to 12 years old will participate in collecting the 3,000 eggs on the field. Special guest, the Easter Bunny, will also be on site to join children in a complimentary photo. A free hot dog luncheon will be served by the Grant Memorial Men’s Club. Tours of the church will be available for families.
The field will be divided into three sections by age so that every child has a fair chance of collecting eggs. In the case that inclement weather prevents the helicopter flyover, heavy equipment will be on site to carry off a different kind of dramatic egg drop! Events such as face painting and storytelling will be moved inside the church.
Valerie Black, chairperson of the Church’s Christian Education Committee, said, “Speaking as a parent, Grant Memorial wrapped itself around my children, making them feel empowered and loved in ways beyond what I could do for them. Grant Memorial is eager to let young people explore their faith and become a meaningful part of our church community.”
Grant Memorial United Methodist Church traces its roots in the Star City to 1888. The church community survived losing its facility to arson in 1996 and now serves the community from its 79 Fleetwood Street building. The church hosts numerous offerings for families, including a nursery available for parents attending church and Sunday School for youth Pre-K to grade 8. Grant Memorial UMC also offers camperships to Christian summer camp and a college scholarship program for members, as well as mission activities and an expansive music program, including regular children’s skits and a traditional Christmas pageant.
